How To Make An Easy DIY TV Frame

I can’t believe I didn’t do this when we got our Frame TV 6 months ago!

This easy DIY TV frame was so easy to do and I had it completed in about 2 hours.

We’ve been so happy with our Frame TV but I knew an actual frame would make it look 100% better. And it did!

You can read all about our living room transformation here.

Let’s get started…

Materials

  • Furring Strips
  • Chair Rail Molding
  • Nail Gun
  • 1 1/4″ Nails
  • Wood Glue
  • Electric Sander or sanding block/sand paper
  • Miter Saw (optional, but this makes it easy to cut 45 degree angles)

Step 1: Cut your boards to length

We have the 65″ Samsung Frame TV, so my cuts were 57.5″ and 33″. I cut 2 of each length out of the furring strips and the molding.

If your TV is a different size, you’ll need to measure the length and width, and then add on the width of one furring strip (3/4″) x 2 to the overall width measurement.

So if your TV measures 45″ x 27″, you’ll make (2) 45″ cuts and (2) 28.5″ cuts. You can reference the picture below to see the way I arranged the boards.

**I almost forgot about the sensor on my TV. I had to cut a small square out of the back of the bottom furring strip between 4″-6″ from the right side.

This allowed the sensor to still work properly. Thankfully, I didn’t have to clear the sensor in the front, only the bottom! Check with your specific TV and decide if you will also need to cut out a small opening for the sensor.

Step 2: Sand the boards

I did a quick sand with my orbital sander to smooth the boards out. I used 120 and 220 grit.

Step 3: Assemble the frame

I used wood glue on each end and attached the furring strips using 1 1/4″ nails with my nail gun.

Then I put a layer of glue on the top of each furring strip and attached the molding with the same nails.

The top edge of the molding should perfectly match the outside edge of the furring strip.

I filled the holes with wood filler and lightly sanded them smooth with a sanding block.

Step 4: Finish the frame

I chose to paint my frame gold but this frame would also look beautiful stained! I used this gold spray paint and then also added a thin layer of Rub ‘n Buff to tone down the gold a little.

Disclaimer: You can still see a small section of the black frame of our TV. The molding I used wasn’t quite wide enough to completely cover it. However, I love the look!

It doesn’t bother me at all but that may be something to keep in mind if you’d prefer the black frame to be completely covered. You will just need a wider trim piece for the top of the frame.
